Biden news today: President jokes about ‘good old days’ with Obama as he suspends student loan debt for the sixth time

Obama jokingly calls Biden ‘vice president’ upon his return to the White House

Barack Obama traveled to the White House on Tuesday for his first public event at the executive mansion since leaving office. He took part in a celebration of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, as Joe Biden announced changes to the health care program that could see up to 200,000 uninsured Americans become eligible for new coverage.

The visit has many Democrats hoping Mr Biden can benefit from his former boss’ still high approval rating among the Democratic base. Mr Biden has recently struggled to increase his poor standing in the polls and there are serious fears that Democratic voter apathy and disappointment could give Republicans an opening in this year’s midterm elections. Mr. Obama says that to win midterm, Democrats have a story to tell, they “just have to tell it.”

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday voted 11 to 11 on the nomination of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. The result will not prevent Ms. Jackson’s nomination from making it to the Senate; she already appears to have the backing of 53 senators, with Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney breaking ranks to support her.

Homeland Security Secretary takes meeting with Republican caucus on border restrictions

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas had a meeting with House GOP members of the “border security caucus” on Tuesday, but Republicans were “not satisfied with the responses.”

The Border Security Caucus – after the announcement last week that the White House would lift all Trump-era Covid restrictions on the border – was fully charged at the meeting.

“It was a rowdy crowd, and you have to give him a lot of credit for picking the most rowdy crowd, coming in and listening to them,” said Darrell Issa, a California Republican who attended the meeting.

“Nothing has really been resolved, other than he promised to give some follow-up information,” he said.

Representative Brian Babin of Texas, co-chair of the caucus, said of the meeting, “We appreciated his courage to come in, knowing that we were 100% opposed to him. But we were not satisfied with the answers he gave us.

Biden to extend Covid student loan freeze until August 31

The United States is once again extending its pandemic-era pause on federal student loan repayments, pushing back the restart date until at least August 31, Associated Press reports.

It is the sixth time the deadline for resuming payments has been extended, as Joe Biden faces pressure from Congress and inflation concerns.

Prior to the extension, the moratorium was set to expire on May 1, and more than 43 million Americans with a total of $1.6 trillion in government loans would once again be in debt.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin hits back at Matt Gaetz

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin seemed so infuriated by Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz’s outlandish questions that he got into a shouting match with the Florida Rep at the end of the five-minute round of Mr Gaetz.

Mr. Austin was on Capitol Hill on Tuesday to testify at a House Armed Services Committee hearing regarding the Department of Defense’s fiscal year 2023 budget request, but Mr. Gaetz had apparently decided to use his time to reprimand the former head of US Central Command on what he described as US defense failures caused by the Pentagon’s embrace of the “wake-up call.”

Specifically, Mr. Gaetz inquired about a lecture given at the United States National Defense University by French economist and author Thomas Picketty titled “Responding to China: The Case for Justice world and democratic socialism.

There are three kinds of days here. There are the West Wing days, when you do really cool stuff. There are the days of House of Cards, where the place seems to be falling apart.
